Private Landlord

Keeping your home, family
and tenants fire safe

Landlord Responsibilities

To sell or lease your property, you must ensure your home is compliant to the new smoke alarm legislation. This involves fitting the home with photoelectric, interconnected smoke alarms in all bedrooms, as well as the hallways or other areas between the bedrooms. They also must be installed on every level of the home. This ensures that when one goes off, they all go off, giving everyone extra time to escape.

Owner-occupiers have until 2027 to comply with this legislation. However, as of 2017, homeowners are required to update any smoke alarms manufactured over 10 years ago and replace all smoke detectors that no longer work with photoelectric smoke alarms that comply with Australian Standards (AS) 3786-2014.
